As a younger adult I tried many times to solve the Sunday newspaper’s crossword puzzles. Many people
enjoy doing crossword puzzles, as do I, but what I did not enjoy was the lack of success in finishing those
puzzles. When Jesus died on the cross for those would believe in Him, He uttered these words, “it is
finished.

When we leave things undone our sense of fulfillment is diminished. Perhaps that is why many who hear the word of God become frustrated, they just do not understand why God does what He does.
God, at times, can seem terribly mysterious. Sometimes God seems to be as difficult to understand as those crossword puzzles. Then sometimes, when we do not give up we find answers. In the Book of Isaiah, the prophet shares God’s mind with us, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, and your ways are not my ways,” says Yahweh. Isaiah 55:8

Men and women have combed through the scriptures for centuries searching for hidden truth, and if they have been fruitful in their search they have been rewarded with the found word, “love”. In my own search for God in scripture I read, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life. John 3:16

This Son, Jesus, referred to as the “Word” in the Gospel according to John, died on a cross intended for us. In His death Jesus removed our guilt and blindness, and He left us His peace. God can be mysterious still, but we know His Word finished what we could not at the cross.
