I was in a rush. I didn’t realize there was another lighthouse in New Orleans. Yet how could I miss seeing a lighthouse five minutes away from New Canal Lighthouse. So I got directions and headed to see Port Pontchartrain lighthouse. I later found out it was also called but Port Pontchartrain Lighthouse stuck with me. To me it was once a guardian of the lake.

I was a little disarmed when I saw the abandoned lighthouse sitting on grass behind a levee. Perhaps it was the lighthouse’s quiet majesty; the compelling colors or abandonment that touched me. This encounter resonated deeply with in me.

Here it was no longer serving the purpose for what it was designed. In spite of its misplaced majesty it stood undaunted by time and circumstance.

As I drove away, I thought about how often I make plans based on my limited knowledge and understanding. Sometimes things that are not on our schedules are the most meaningful. It is in these moments that God steps in and gives a gift beyond imagination. He opens our hearts and eyes to minds to hidden treasures.
