II Timothy 1:9
What is it to be called? It is to be chosen, set apart, elect by God to fulfill His own purposes. It is a truly awesome thing to know that the eternal, almighty God has called, or chosen, some of us to be His own. But you may say, doesn’t God want us all to be His own? According to II Peter 9, it says, “The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some men count slackness, but is longsuffering to us, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.” And this is true. God does WANT all to be saved. But Peter does not say all WILL be saved; only that God desires this. And it only makes sense. If God were to save everybody, then there would be no cause to have a hell, would there? Since there is such a place, it only makes sense that some, maybe most, will end up there. They weren’t called or elect or chosen for heaven. Is God unfair? Not at all. For if He did not choose some, then none would be saved (Romans 3:10-18). And this doesn’t mean some of us who were chosen were better than others. It just means that for whatever reason, God decided to save us for His own, even though we are just as evil and sinful as the lost. That’s truly good news!
