Philippians 4:8; Matthew 21:12-13; Romans 12:2
I've probably typed out and deleted four to five introductions for this post now, but here goes:
I will be honest; hopefully not mean, just real. If I do come across as harsh or rude, I'm sorry, but for many of you, this is probably going to hit home, and it might hurt.
But please see me through to the end. I would encourage you to pray before you read this and ask God, "What do you want me to learn right now? Is there something I can take from this?" Because I think this one's going to be pretty unusual, and maybe even the good kind of offensive.
I am going to begin with one of my favorite verses,
Philippians 4:8:
"Finally brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable— if there is any moral excellence and if there is any praise— dwell on these things."
Please have this verse in mind as I will be bringing it up a lot.
I want you for a minute to think about what you've done in the past two weeks. I just want you to think about it.
Have you done anything?
Gone to the beach, went to the mall, seen friends; you get the idea.
Have you read anything?
This doesn't mean just books, it also includes magazines, articles (online or otherwise), signs, and so on. Keep the first few in your head.
Have you seen anything?
This is pretty much everything else, like pictures, videos, movies, etc. Covers of books, magazines, even people- and whatever else you can see. Remember some of these, too.
Keep these in mind while I talk about what might seem like an entirely unrelated subject.
There was a man who, about 2,000 years ago, died to save mankind as we know it. He lived an incredible life- He was absolutely perfect. He did get angry once though- it was a righteous anger, because He was a perfect Man who hated sin (not the sinners themselves.) On one such occasion, He tipped a few tables to make His point.
12 And Jesus entered the temple and drove out all those who were buying and selling in the temple, and overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who were selling doves.
13 And He said to them, "It is written, 'MY HOUSE SHALL BE CALLED A HOUSE OF PRAYER'; but you are making it a ROBBERS' DEN."
That's Matthew 21:12-13.
Whoa, right? Imagine being there when Jesus starts dumping all your hard-earned money on the floor, calling you a thief.
But they were thieves. Yes, really. They were stealing glory from God, cheating people of money and cheating God in the process. The temple was a holy place where God was to be honored, where one went to worship an amazing Lord Who, at that point, could only be accessed through sacrifice.
Cheating and dishonoring God in the temple was definitely something worth Jesus being angry at.
So how does that relate to what we talked about earlier?
Here comes the hard part.
You are God's temple. If you are a Christian, if God really lives in you, then that is what you are: a temple.
Therefore, you should be filled with what is right and honoring to God, or in other words, the things described in Philippians 4:8.
Makes sense, right? You don't want all that lying, cheating, sinful stuff in God's temple!
(Yeah, but I don't do that bad of stuff. I live the best I can; besides, God's saved me so even if I mess up I will be forgiven. It's not like I've murdered anyone.)
All true. I am in no way trying to condemn you (because without the grace of God I'd be pretty much done for, too.)
I'm just wondering, have we cleaned out all of the temple?
What about our minds? What are we 'dwelling on'?
I don't think we consider what we read in books and watch on a screen to be part of the examination.
Is what you're taking in through your eyes acceptable to God? If Jesus was there (which He actually is, if He dwells in your temple), would he be flipping over the tables?
He might be for me.
You probably don't live out most of the stuff you read about, or watch happening on a television screen. But if you're not going to live your life like that, then why would you choose to watch someone else do it? If what you're seeing or reading, whether it be sexual, violent, obscene, perverted, or what have you, is not part of how you live your life, why do you want to see it?
And I know our culture is very media-focused. So much is portrayed on huge screens and pictures in the mall. It's difficult not to see some of the stuff that we just come across every day. But that's all the more reason to stand out in our media choices.
People will see Christ more. We need to apply the verse I talked about to every aspect of our lives, not just one or two. When we tell people "I'm not watching that; it doesn't honor God," we may feel like idiots, but they see that, and they wonder. When we walk out of the movie theater, people know there's something different.
I love this verse. It reminds me that it's good to stand out from our culture:
Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.
Romans 12:2
Paraphrased? Don't live like everyone else in the world, but become a whole new person by thinking about what honors God, so that you can carry out His will better.
Yes, I felt like an idiot telling my peers I wasn't watching the movie that was being shown in class. I told them that I didn't want to fill my mind with garbage that I wasn't going to live out.
They laughed at me, but I'm glad I didn't laugh, too and say, "Ha ha, just kidding, I'm gonna be infecting myself with the same lame junk you guys are seeing, too".
It's hard, folks. No one said it would be easy. But we need fear of God, not fear of what man will think. In the end, I'd rather be a servant of God than a servant of man.
In light of all that I've said, think about those things you've filled your heart with lately. Do they HONOR GOD?
Is Jesus trying to turn some tables over? You might feel like the temple's been invaded now.
The next time you watch something, read something, or go somewhere, try to think about Philippians 4:8. Does everything your temple is filled with HONOR GOD?
Try as much as you can to stand out in the media area of life. Make people wonder about you when you choose to walk 800 meters with your teenage son outside the mall to avoid the gross junk advertised by a women's undergarment store. (Yes, someone I know did that. Very cool.)
One last takeaway for you:
If we all walked around with the mindset, HONOR GOD, how much more glory could we give to Him?
No, I'm not trying to tell you how to live your life. I just hope that I can bring glory to God and I want to encourage others to do that, too.
Don't know how much hate-mail I'll get, don't know who actually read all of this, don't know if I'll have some people whose lifestyles are being rethought out.
I just know that Jesus is pretty good at turning over tables.
