Matthew 18:20
One hot summer day, I was driving home to Denver from Omaha on a highway in Kansas that went through endless fields of wheat and corn. I was almost mesmerized by the monotony of the view and the heat when off in the distance I could see a church steeple high above the fields. As I got closer it didn't appear that there was a town or houses near it but I was curious about this church out in the middle of nowhere. I pulled off the main highway onto a county road and headed for the steeple. When I pulled up to the church, I found it surrounded by cars and trucks. There must have been a church service or fellowship as it was Sunday evening and it amazed me that so many people came from miles around to be together in this isolated place. I smiled to myself and thought how Christ brings people together. This was true of the early church in Jerusalem as recorded in Acts 2:42-47; "All the believers were together . . . " (vs 44a). Because they had become sisters and brothers in Christ they had a unique bond and were able to strengthen and encourage each other in faith, hope and love. Christ attracts us to himself and brings believers together whether they are in large city, small town or out in the rural countryside.
