Genesis 19:30
Lot had managed to live a chaste life in Sodom, of all places. Yet after he was saved from Sodom's destruction by the very hand of God Himself, Lot seemed to forget that He had the favor of God on his life and was fearful of living in Zoar, the town to which he fled. Scripture doesn't reveal what his exact fears were, only that he succumbed to them and tried to run away from them; and therein lies the lesson.
Before we judge Lot too harshly, let's remember that his behavior is something we can all identify with. How many times in our lives do we try to escape from the world physically, mentally, emotionally? Catastrophe, loss, fear - these all have a way of making us forget God's presence in our lives. These all have a way of making us push others away, including God. But this is not the position we want to be in. Away from God, and away from accountability to others, we become unsuspecting prey, both to the wiles of the enemy and the wiles of those whom we think we can trust. Sadly, not everyone in even our closest circles always has our best interests at heart - sometimes they come with their own agenda. In our vulnerable state, we may engage in sinful, reprehensible behavior that has no place in a godly life. Friend, we must always be on our guard (1 Peter 5:8-10).
