Crisp air, incredible rocky formations, and a singing brook pushed aside concerns about the hike rated “difficult.” Eight years had passed since we’d hiked this Colorado trail.
This day our rock-climbing son, Chris, was with us as we set out for a morning of invigorating, heart-pumping exercise…at least for me. It was an easy climb for Chris and energizing for Ken who took the lead and Chris the rearguard…sandwiching me between.
I felt protected as Ken could warn of any particularly difficult spots; while Chris behind watched and steadied me if need be.
Thankfully, the hike was not problematic. But, life isn’t always that way.
Challenges up ahead are sometimes dangerous and require warning and counsel. Or, before we can turn around, we lose our equilibrium.
Spiritually, through my relationship with God in Christ, I have a trailblazer and a rearguard…with me sandwiched between.
While hiking, I did my part overcoming challenges…keeping my eyes on the pacesetter and trusting my rearguard.
By keeping my eyes on Christ who blazes the trail before me, I confidently move forward assured of his care from behind.
Isaiah 52: 12b reminds us, “For the Lord will go before you, and the God of Israel will be your rearguard.”
I’ve learned that ‘rearguard’ means to gather or gather you up. So, if we get tired, slip up, or fall, the Lord will tenderly gather us into His everlasting arms. Selah
