What do you think would make you happy? More money? An appreciative boss? Compliant children?

To be happy, we must commit time each day treasuring God’s word in our heart.

The prescription given in Psalm 1:1-3 mentions none of these or anything we often think we need to be happy. God says we are happy when we do not take advice from or hang out with sinners.

God is not saying that we are to seclude ourselves in our holy huddles. Rather, we are called to be salt and light in our world (Matthew 5:13–16). We are to be making disciples (Matthew 28:18–20) and be witnesses in our world (Acts 1:8).

How do we keep, though, from being drawn into the enemy’s trap? Like with any prescription, we must take all of it according the doctor’s direction. In this case, we must not only avoid counsel from and fellowship with sinners, but we must also love and mediate on God’s Word.

Meditation brings to mind some bald guy sitting cross-legged on a floor chanting and humming. That is far from what God has in mind for us. For believers to be happy, we must make reading, memorizing, and applying the Word of God our priority.

If we truly desire to be happy, we must commit time each day treasuring God’s word in our heart so that we might not sin against Him (Psalm 119:11).
