John 14:6
He called me Delagin!!!
My wife and I were headed off for a get away weekend. Our son was watching the dogs for us, and our daughter was taking care of the horses. All we had left to do was take our stuff to the car and head off. That's when we first met Duke. We were headed to our car and as we walked around the corner of the garage there he stood on the other side of our car, with a shocked look on his face. He was headed to the front of the house as we were coming around the back. We caught each other off guard. He quickly told us he had been to the nursing home in Eureka to visit his mother. He drives by our place often when he goes to see her. He couldn't help but notice the large pile of horse manure piled up next to the barn, and wanted to know if he could have some. Much to our delight we said yes he could have some, so my wife gave him one of her business cards and we were on are way. We were about fifteen minutes in to our trip when I asked my wife what was his name again? She said she didn't remember his name but if he calls he will probably say his name again. Three weeks went by before Duke would call, to say he was on his way to get some manure. When Duke got here I had him back his truck up to the pile. We talked a little and he said he was wanting several more truck loads. Knowing I was going to have more dealings with this man I thought I should reintroduce myself to him and was hoping he would say his name again. So I reached out my hand and said I'm Del again. He shook my hand and with a straight face he said thanks for the horse manure Delagin. Now you can probably imagine my shock! He thinks my name is "Delagan". With a name like Dellis people often call me by different names, and I'm ok with that. But no one has ever called me Delagin before, and it doesn't even sound good! I new I had to fix this right away! So I said "NO NO" I'm just Del, thinking I had taken care of the name problem and hoping he will finally give up his name.
He says Oh ok Del, I just go by Duke. I didn't pursue the matter any more it seemed that I was only making it worse. At least now I know to call him Duke and that it's not his full name. He probably still thinks my name is Delagin, but hopefully he keeps calling me Del.
Stories like this one are pretty funny. When we call someone by name we are identifying how they are. As christians we're not just identified by our birth name, but also the name of Jesus. When we except Jesus as are Lord and Savior were asking him in to us. So now when God looks at us He sees Jesus, pretty awesome right!!! The world talks about religion and spirituality as if they are the way to God, but that couldn't be further from the truth. It's not what you know, but who you know. John 14:6 Jesus said: I am the way, and the truth, and the life. NO one comes to the Father except through me. It's kinda hard to misinterpret this verse. I'd rather be called Delagin than for someone to call me religious. I hope when we meet new people, and old friends when they think of our names, they also think of the name of Jesus.

I love the line, “I’d rather be called Delagan, than to be called religious.” Amen!
