Acts 7:1-60
Human has abilities I call superpowers. One of the most common is the ability to filter things that are heard. Our ears are especially made for this ability. It may be most prominent to others, to some not. People with this kind of superpower only hear and listen to things they want and believe. They are commonly called people with alethephobia (fear of hearing the truth).
The council of priests is most likely have alethephobia. In the book of Acts, Stephen, one of the seven chosen to serve who was described in the Bible as “full of grace and power, was doing great wonders and signs among the people”, was seized by some of those who belonged to the synagogue of the Freedmen (as it was called), and of the Cyrenians, and of the Alexandrians, and of those from Cilicia and Asia and brought to the council of priests. He spoke among them about God, about Jesus. When they heard his speech, they were enraged, stopped their ears, cast him out of the city and stoned him.
I have also known someone with alethephobia. Our friendship was broken because she doesn’t want to hear the truth and even accused me as a “close minded” person. Like the priests, she stopped her ears from hearing my explanations and stoned me with accusations.
When faced with these kind of people, let us respond how Stephen responded: pray to God. Let go and let God take over.
