Our grand-dog, Joy, has been testing her freedom lately. She’s used to being off the leash when someone is outside, but lately has begun slipping away and visiting neighbors on the other side of the woods. The first times it happened she wouldn’t go far…and would return as soon as she was called. But freedom has a strong pull, and before long, our calls went unanswered, and we had to go looking for her. Punishment didn’t seem to affect her search for freedom, however. She would rather taste freedom and face the consequences, no matter what. Recently my husband decided on another approach. Instead of punishing her for her disobedience, he started rewarding her for staying around! A pocketful of treats is keeping her close by these days. It reminds me of my own bent to wandering from God. Freedom is so enticing! No rules! No restrictions! No obligations! No restraints! Doing my own thing has consequences…and guilt and separation from God is the result. How better to obey in the first place, sticking close to the Father who offers daily treats of His love, forgiveness, & peace? Lord, I’m sorry I’m such a slow learner. Keep me mindful of Your rewards that in the end are much more satisfying than my puny attempts at freedom.

Freedom is so enticing! No rules! No restrictions! No obligations! No restraints!

"To obey is better than sacrifice
I don't need your money
I want your life
And I hear you say that I'm coming back soon
But you act like I'll never return." - song by Keith Green
